The missionary position is a sexual position where a
woman lies on her back and the man lies on top of her.
It is probably the most common sexual position and possibly
the oldest. Archaeological finds have uncovered
depictions of the missionary position going back several
millennia.
The missionary position gets its name from a possible
myth that this position was taught by missionaries as the
only acceptable sexual position. This may be no more
than a myth but the name has stuck.
The missionary position was taught by the Catholic Church
as the proper sexual position from the 6th to the 16th
century. Exceptions were made for those who were ill,
obese, or pregnant as these made sex in the missionary
position difficult if not impossible.
There is absolutely nothing in the Bible which advocates
that sex should take place using the missionary position.
Tradition held that this was the best position and at some
point it started to be taught by the church as the
acceptable one.
There are advantages to the missionary position, both
psychological and physical. The position allows for a
lot of skin to skin contact as well as eye contact.
Because of this it is considered a more intimate and
romantic position by some. The position also allows
for greater penetration by the penis which can increase
fertility as sperm is deposited at the neck of the womb.
Despite the advantages to the missionary position, there
is nothing that makes this position more moral or biblical
than any other sexual position.
