What Does the Bible Say About Anal Sex?

Sodomy, another term for anal sex, takes its name from the city of Sodom.  The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by God because of their homosexuality.

The Bible does not use the term anal sex, nor does it use sodomy as that word was a later invention.  It does hold Sodom as an example of sin, sexual immorality, and perversion.  Sodom is used as a measuring stick to compare the sins of other cities as Jesus speaks in Matthew 10 & 11.  Sodom had such notoriety centuries after its destruction that people still knew of it and Jesus proclaims that it would have repented and have been saved if the miracles performed in Jerusalem had been performed there.

The sins of Sodom appear to apply to homosexuality however.  This is discussed at length in the article, "Is Homosexuality Sin?"  There is nothing explicitly said in the Bible about heterosexual anal sex.

Heterosexual anal sex is viewed by some as a way of maintaining one's virginity while still performing sexual acts.  Others view it as a "final frontier" to keep sex interesting.  In the first case, the discussion centers around the idea of fooling around and is discussed in another article.

To untangle the issue of heterosexual anal sex, we must remember the purpose of sex.  No children are created through anal sex, but this isn't the only reason God gave us sex.  It is also for our enjoyment.  Some couples do receive pleasure from anal sex.

Of course vaginal sex is designed to be pleasurable and is the obvious intended way as it not only provides the means of bearing children, but the vagina lubricates itself in preparation for sex.  Anal sex therefore brings pleasure in a way that God did not intend.

A final issue with anal sex is not moral but physical.  Anal sex does increase the possibility of spreading disease and increases the chances of infection.  This is in addition to pain that a woman is likely to receive from anal sex.

In the end, there is nothing clearly sinful with anal sex between a married couple but it is contrary to the way God intended it.  God gave us a perfectly safe and natural way to enjoy sex without the drawbacks of anal sex and that should be the preferred method.
